Newry & Mourne Enterprise Agency was set up in 1983 as a division of Newry and Mourne Co-operative (founded, 1972). It was the first local Enterprise Agency on the island of Ireland. It's mission was to promote jobs and create wealth in the Newry & Mourne area.
Newry & Mourne Co-operative Ltd lanuched the "Work in Newry" (WIN) campaign in 1975 in an attempt to alleviate the chronic unemployment which the area had suffered for generations. It took over a recently closed food-processing factory site to create starter workspace units for unemployed and underemployed people. This was one of the first community owned and managed workspace projects in Europe.
The climate in Newry & Mourne has changed since the early days of the Enterprise Agency. Major retail developments, inward investments and recent changes in political and economic relations within Northern Ireland and between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have seen the levels of unemployment drop dramatically and a rise in the standard of living in general.
